Special help for those with ADHD
Sometimes people become experts on helping people with problems because they have overcome
them themselves.
In addition to the other clients I see which includes adult children
of dysfunctional parents, I also help those with Attention Deficit Disorder. Both of my own children have it as does another one of my siblings. Unless you actually have the
condition many people cannot possible understood how difficult it can be to manage at times.
Depending of what our unique handicaps are which could be anything from attention to
details such as not paying attention to small things such as typing errors often we will focus on the Deficit of
the disorder rather than the positives. We could be mainly inanttentive or mainly hyperactive or a combination
of the two.
From my own personal experience this is one of my biggest issues, being hyperactive
and not paying attention to detail. For example I have a tendency to overwork sometimes and do
things quickly however the downside is that my inattention to detail makes something simple such as typing a
book or a website without a positive nightmare, even when I have checked it multiple time.
On a positive note most ADHD's work very quicky and cope under pressure extremely
well. They are usually highly creative and are able to multi talk and do things like speed
read and when Hyper focussed they can do things far quicker than other people. But its about finding a
balance and then finding what you are good at and more importantly what you enjoy.
Things that you find boring or dull will often be left to one side for more stimulating
activities which can then leave you scattered and unfocussed.
And yet many successful people have ADHD. People like Richard Branson have gone on
to run highly individual business but until they are focussed they often suffer from self defeating patterns and
handicap themselves when in fact what they have is a gift.
Managing two children with ADHD was spirits way of having a big sense of humour. I not
only learnt about my own condition but learnt how to be far more understanding of my own children without
automatically assuming they were just lazy because their rooms were untidy or they didn't do well at
school.
I am happy to coach people with ADHD and for those of you that have this disorder I would
like you to start thinking about it in new ways and use the term Attention Surplus Disorder rather than on focusing
on what for many has felt like a deficit.
There are many ways you to utilise this condition to to more things that you could ever
have thought possible instead of staying stuck in procrastination behaviour.
Feel free to give me a call to find out how I can help.
